Everything you need
to know about diamonds.
From the 4Cs to lab-grown diamonds, shape guides to certification — your complete resource for buying with confidence.
Knowledge is the
foundation of great jewelry.
At maia, we believe that an informed buyer is a confident buyer. Whether you're shopping for an engagement ring, a milestone gift, or a personal indulgence, understanding your diamond ensures you invest wisely — and love what you choose.
The 4 Cs of diamonds.
Every diamond is graded on four key characteristics. Together, they determine a diamond's beauty, rarity, and value.
Cut — The most
important C.
Cut is widely considered the most critical of the 4Cs because it most directly influences a diamond's brilliance and sparkle. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully from every angle — even a high-color, high-clarity stone will look dull if the cut is poor.
Cut refers not to the shape of the diamond, but to the quality of its proportions, symmetry, and polish — how precisely each facet has been crafted to interact with light.
Maximum light return. Superior brilliance and fire. The benchmark for exceptional cut quality.
Near-ideal proportions. Outstanding sparkle at a more accessible price point.
Reflects most light. Slightly less brilliance, but solid value for budget-conscious buyers.
Light escapes through the sides or bottom. Noticeably less sparkle — generally not recommended.
Color — Less is
more.
Diamond color grades measure the absence of color in a white diamond. The GIA color scale runs from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less color a diamond has, the rarer and more valuable it typically is.
In practice, the difference between adjacent grades is very subtle and often invisible to the naked eye. Many buyers find that G–H grades offer an excellent balance of near-colorlessness and value.
The rarest and most valuable. Virtually no detectable color — exceptional for all settings.
Slight color only detectable by experts. Excellent value — G and H are the most popular choice.
Slight warmth visible. Can look beautiful in yellow or rose gold settings.
Noticeable yellow or brown tint. Typically used for very budget-conscious purchases.
Clarity — Nature's
fingerprint.
Clarity refers to the presence of natural inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (surface imperfections) within a diamond. These are formed during the intense heat and pressure of a diamond's creation — no two diamonds are exactly alike.
For most buyers, an eye-clean diamond — one where inclusions are not visible to the naked eye — is the sweet spot. VS1–VS2 and SI1 grades often offer excellent eye-cleanliness at significantly better value than Flawless stones.
No inclusions visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare and priced accordingly.
Inclusions invisible to the naked eye and very difficult to see under magnification.
Minor inclusions, invisible to the naked eye. Excellent value — a top choice for most buyers.
Inclusions may be visible under magnification. SI1 is often eye-clean — inspect before buying.
Carat — Size isn't
everything, but it matters.
Carat refers to a diamond's weight, not its size — though weight and size are closely related. One carat equals 0.2 grams. As carat weight increases, so does price — often exponentially, especially at popular "magic" sizes like 1.00ct, 1.50ct, and 2.00ct.
A smart tip: buying just below these thresholds (e.g. 0.90ct instead of 1.00ct) can save significant money with very little visible difference. The cut quality also affects perceived size — a well-cut 0.90ct can appear larger than a poorly cut 1.00ct.
Delicate and elegant. Perfect for solitaires, side stones, or minimalist styles.
The most popular range for engagement rings. Excellent balance of presence and value.
A commanding presence. Prized milestone sizes — particularly 1.00ct and 1.50ct.
Rare and striking. A showpiece stone that commands attention in any setting.
Lab-grown vs. natural diamonds.
Lab-Grown Diamonds
Grown in a controlled environment- Chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds — real diamonds in every sense.
- Significantly more affordable, typically 50–80% less than natural equivalents.
- Certified by IGI or GIA with the same grading standards as natural diamonds.
- Conflict-free by nature — no mining, no environmental disruption.
- Available in a wider range of sizes and grades at accessible price points.
- Our specialty — we offer an exceptional selection of lab-grown stones.
Natural Diamonds
Formed over billions of years- Formed naturally deep within the earth over 1–3 billion years under extreme heat and pressure.
- Traditionally considered rare and highly valued as investment pieces.
- Certified by GIA, AGS, or other leading gemological laboratories.
- Each stone is completely unique — no two natural diamonds are identical.
- Preferred by those who value geological rarity and heritage.
- Also available at maia — speak with our concierge for natural sourcing.
Diamond shapes, explained.
Shape is one of the most personal choices in diamond selection — it defines the character of your piece. Here are the most popular shapes and what makes each one special.
Round Brilliant
The most popular shape. 58 facets engineered for maximum sparkle and brilliance. A timeless classic.
Oval
Elongates the finger and appears larger per carat than a round. Brilliant-cut faceting with a softer silhouette.
Cushion
Rounded corners with larger facets. A romantic, vintage-inspired shape with exceptional fire.
Emerald
A step-cut rectangular shape. Fewer facets create dramatic flashes of light — sleek and architectural.
Pear
A teardrop silhouette combining round and marquise cuts. Elegant and unique — worn point-up or down.
Heart
A symbol of romance. Requires skillful cutting to achieve perfect symmetry — deeply personal and bold.
Marquise
A long, narrow shape with pointed ends. Maximizes carat weight appearance — one of the most elongating cuts.
Princess
A square brilliant-cut with sharp corners. The second most popular shape — modern, clean, and brilliant.
Diamond certification.
Every diamond at maia comes with a certificate from a leading gemological laboratory. These reports are your guarantee that the diamond's 4Cs have been independently verified.
IGI — International Gemological Institute
The world's largest independent gemological laboratory and the global leader in lab-grown diamond certification. IGI certificates provide a detailed grade report covering cut, color, clarity, and carat weight with precision and consistency.
Most maia lab-grown diamonds carry IGI certification — the industry standard for lab-grown stones.
GIA — Gemological Institute of America
The most recognized and respected grading institution in the world, founded in 1931. GIA established the universal 4Cs grading system and is widely considered the gold standard for natural diamond certification.
Our natural diamonds carry GIA certification. GIA also certifies lab-grown diamonds using the same rigorous standards.
